So many women have done very well in our community, but not all have.
The statistics show that abuse against women is very prevalent.
But Yellow Brick House (YBH) is OFFERING A HAND.
YBH is an organization that is helping:
> women who are being abused
> women who have been abused
> create awareness that abuse is not right and need not be tolerated
Currently there are 3 facilities:
- an emergency shelter for women and their children
- transitional housing – with support services
- an outreach program facility with administration services
Also, YBH is out in our community with the message that abuse is not acceptable. They are very active among students.
Other points:
- YBH has been in our community for 31years
- all staff is university trained staff
- services available in 27 languages
- services are free
This is not enough. The number of abused women asking for assistance is growing.
There are underlying values and the economic downturn that contribute to this abuse that cannot readily be changed but we can OFFER A HAND.
The YBH is raising funds to build a new facility
- 4000 sq. ft. building with 20 beds, 5 cribs.
- Location to be determined – need affordable property in south York Region
- $4 million dollars needed – includes first 2 years operating costs
- Over $1.3 million has been raised
