Profile of Regional & Local Councillor Vito Spatafora

Vito has an Honours B.A. in Geography from Wilfrid Laurier University and a Master Degree in Environmental Land Use Planning from York University.

Vito has extensive work experience in both the public and private sectors. Early in his career Vito entered municipal politics as the political aid to the Mayor of the City of York. Working in the private sector as an urban planner, Vito was an active partner in a consulting firm, working with non-profit groups to develop affordable housing for low income families and seniors.

Vito was first elected as Ward Councillor in 1994. After serving Ward 1 for 12 years, Vito was elected Regional Councillor in 2006 and has continued to serve as Deputy Mayor & Regional Councillor since 2010.

Some of Vito’s noteworthy achievements include:

• Founder of the popular Tastes of the Hill annual event, which has raised more than $400,000 for local charities;

• Championed the 2014 Tow Truck By-law regulating licensing and towing charges to protect unsuspecting victims from exorbitant tow truck fees;

• Awarded the Queen’s Jubilee Medal for the Honorable Costas Menegakis for 30 years exemplary community service;

• Received a Certificate of Achievement from the Honourable David C. Onley, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario for his role as Chair of the Accessibility Advisory Committee;

• Recognized by the Oak Ridges Moraine Foundation for his leadership in acquiring thousands of acres of environmentally sensitive land to preserve and protect the Oak Ridges Moraine from development;

• Instrumental in securing the construction of the Community Environmental Centre in Richmond Hill to recycle building materials.

Active on over 70 committees, Vito’s career has been focused on helping people and building safe communities.
