Song Ryan Moon was born in Korea but now lives in Toronto. She has been in Canada only four years (1996), but has made a name for herself as a fine artist. Already known in her home country, as well as in Japan, and in the United States, she has joined a number of local art societies, taken workshops, and participated in many juried shows. She often places well in the shows garnering first place at The Varley Art Gallery in Unionville, Ontario, and also in the Town of Aurora Art Shows, The Toronto Art Expo, and in Korea received the Prime Minister’s Award.
Song has a Master of Art degree from Konkuk University in Seoul, Korea, but to get the feel of north American arts training, she is a full time student at the Ontario College of Art. She is dedicated to making excellent art and works at it all the time. What makes her artwork unique is her combination of very sophisticated design, the layering of watercolor with Chinese oil-based inks, and sometimes in the mixed media pieces, she uses gold and silver sparkles. Song Ryan Moon is an elected member of the Ontario Society of Artists and has been selected for several juried shows.
There is a lot of negative space painting, almost a stencil feeling to hidden images and unusually matched images in unexpected color schemes. They make the viewer search the picture plane for one surprise after another. Her work is often vertical images, and has very strong design elements, gradation of value, and of colour.
Song talks about how her composition is rhythmical, buoyant and embodies the tender qualities of music, love, peace, hope and life. Surfaces are rich with texture and harmonious color schemes or sometimes jarring as in the pieces that are purple, turquoise, and yellow with dashes of purple and gold. It is a wake up call for the viewer to pay attention. The art is full of symbols and themes and focuses on building a series of paintings, such as her Life series: butterflies, fish, apples, trees, flowers. Shrimps, and other symbols reappear in her themed pieces. There is something special about how nature is represented in such a unique way.
Song Ryan Moon, is an artist who helps us see the world in many new, interesting, and exciting ways and more can be expected in her artistic future.
