‘Many things have changed BUT one thing remains the same: OUR COMMITMENT TO THE SAFETY OF OUR PATIENTS, TEAM MEMBERS AND FAMILIES.
There are many talks and predictions of when we can start seeing our non-emergency patients again. Unfortunately, we don’t know ‘when’ and experts in Dental Public Health can’t even agree, with ranges from a few weeks to 1 to 2 months. Additional challenge is the shortage of PPE in dental offices as most of us donated ours at the beginning of this pandemic.
Infection control has always been our top priority and we follow infection control recommendations made by the Canadian Dental Association (CDA), the Royal College of Dental Surgeons and the Ministry of Health. We follow the activities of these agencies so that we are up-to-date on any new rulings or guidance that may be issued. We do this to make sure that our infection control procedures are current and adhere to each agency’s recommendations.
As we prepare the office for re-opening and even though a lot of details are still up in the air, some of the changes below might become a part of the future modifications of your visits:
- Email or over the phone screening questionnaire 48 hours before your visit, prior to appointment confirmation,
- Waiting in the car or outside until we call you to enter the office,
- Same screening questions again when you are about to enter the office and a form will need to be signed before you enter the office affirming your health status,
- Your temperature will be taken before you enter the office to further monitor your health status
- Use of hand sanitizer when you enter the office,
- No access to coat closet, you have to bring your outerwear into the operatory with you,
- Reception seating area might be closed or have limited chairs, practicing social distancing with 2 meters apart between chairs, thus you will be asked to come alone or with one other person (who will accompany you into the operatory and remain there or will stay in the car for the duration of the appointment),
- No magazines, children’s books and toys in the reception area since those items are difficult to clean and disinfect,
- Barrier to protect the reception desk,
- Clinical staff will be wearing masks and face shields at all times and perhaps gowns and caps,
- Pre-treatment rinse with an approved oral rinse to reduce the concentration of bacteria and virus residing in your mouth,
- Appointments will be managed to allow for social distancing between patients which means fewer options will be available for scheduling your appointments,
- Over the phone consultation, assessment and discussing treatment being done prior to your in-office visits to minimize ‘verbal contact’ while you are in the chair
