The 1st annual walkathon was held on February 23rd 2019, and the organizers are so grateful to say it was a huge success!
They were able to surpass their goal of $25,000 and raise $46,064.00!
Over 22 teams and 158 walkers joined their efforts to respond to homelessness in our community. This will help eliminate their $70,000 funding shortfall for 2019!
The demand for the Out of the Cold services was high again this winter - they were over our capacity of 30 beds on many nights. 3 new shelters were opened this winter in order to meet growing demand. The funds from the walkathon were critical in ensuring our services continue next winter season.
MIOTC shelters over 500 people in need and serves over 12,000 meals each winter. They have over 57 community groups of various faiths and ethnicities who come together each winter, and over 1,400 volunteers!
Together, they are saving lives and giving people in need a home for the winter.
Please know that 100% of the funds Out of the Cold receives (a small portion from the walk goes to the lead organization Blue Sea Philanthropy) will go directly towards critical shelter services such as meals, medical program and transportation for homeless people.
Please mark your calendar – the 2nd annual Coldest Night of the Year walk will take place on Saturday February 22nd 2020!
Here's a link to some great photos of the event taken by a local volunteer photographer, Chris Robart. He captured the event very well!
