Construct – skills training for people facing homelessness

less than 1 minute

an example of really helping those who need help

Construct has opened a brand-new training facility and is celebrating two years of delivering rapid on-the-job skills training to propel vulnerable trainees facing homelessness into secure, long-term, well-paying careers in the construction trades.

Since launching in 2020, Construct has expanded from York Region to both Peel and Durham, and has increased its impact from supporting 40 trainees per year to over 140.

It has been internationally recognized as a leader and innovator in the construction industry.

Developed by Blue Door, a charity founded in 1982 focused on supporting people experiencing homelessness, Construct provides extensive wraparound supports for vulnerable trainees in addition to trades including:

  • first aid certification
  • employability training
  • connections to employers

In partnership with the YMCA, LiUNA Local 506 Training Centre, and Humber College, trainees are provided with:

  • resources and supports including no enrollment fees
  • transportation
  • food support
  • wages to successfully secure apprenticeships.

Within two years, Construct helped over 200 trainees graduate from the program and completed over 120 high-quality and competitively priced general labour construction jobs within the community.

Trainees learn trades skills such as:

  • woodworking
  • carpentry
  • painting
