Let's Explore Richmond Hill - Twickenham Park

1 min to read

You could spend a lot of time exploring the trails and perching on the rails of the boardwalks at this park.

You could be in the sun and shade.

This is a green space that has seen a lot of work gone into construction the infrastructure to make it amenable to enjoy.  Wide and well packed trails and wide and well constructed boardwalks.

The official sign for Twickenham Park is at Canyon Hill Drive but unless you live there, you'd probably want to drive to Elgin West Community Centre (Bathurst, north of Elgin Mills) - lots of parking there.

You go behind the community centre and easily find the trail head. What you will see depends on when you go.  Dense vegetation hide the many birds and small mammals that consider this place home.

The first boardwalk overlooks a marsh.  In spring and summer you'll see many Red Winged Black Birds.

Listen for the frogs. Maybe you'll spot a turtle or a duck.

If you continue west and south on this trail past the board walk there is a dense oak forest. In June of 2021 the gypsy moth caterpillar had invaded and you may wish to wear a hat. It is anticipated that by mid July this insect will no longer be a nuisance and will have pupated.

The paths seemed to have been constructed to conform to the current need to social distance and stay 6 feet apart.
There is a rail fence to keep us on the path and allow the forest floor to regenerate.

Since 2019 there has been an active regeneration project

Watch for some birds you will not likely find in your back yard.

There is a playground at both ends of the trail.  The kids can climb and you can contemplate.
