Culture Days!! Lots of free activities

Culture Days is a national celebration seeks to eliminate barriers to access and participation and encourage appreciation of arts and culture.

Here in Town there are many activities during this three-day event

FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 27TH

Art Conversations -  10 a.m. – 6 p.m. - Take the opportunity to preview the artwork of the 17th annual Richmond Hill Art and Studio Tour artists! Artists will be present for demonstrations and engaging conversation at the Richmond Hill Central Library 

SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 28TH

Art Conversations - 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. - Take the opportunity to preview the artwork of the 17th annual Richmond Hill Art and Studio Tour artists! Artists will be present for demonstrations and engaging conversations at the Richmond Hill Central Library.

Family Storytime - 10:15 – 11 a.m. - Come for 45 minutes of silly stories, finger plays, rhymes, activities and songs. Tickets will be handed out 15 minutes before the program begins at the Richmond Hill Central Library. Limit of 30 tickets will be handed out.

What Makes Our Community Resillient?  10:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. - Help create a ‘Resilience Map’ of Richmond Hill by adding stickers to a large map to indicate where you have seen or done ‘resilient’ things like using a bike path, solar panels on a roof, community gardens, etc. Then create a community art piece by using coloured string to indicate your interest/support for certain ‘resilient’ actions or features at the Richmond Hill Central Library. 

Spin and Weave with the Burr House Spinners and Weavers - 10:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. - Do you love textiles? Come and try a hand at spinning and weaving! The Burr House Spinners & Weavers Guild welcomes anyone with an interest in such fibre arts as spinning, weaving, knitting, quilting, dyeing, felting, basketry and tapestry at the Richmond Hill Central Library. 

Experiment with Watercolour - 10:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. Watch live watercolour demonstrations by local artists from the Dynasty Watercolour Association on canvas, wood and even paper towels! Enjoy a display of artwork from around the world and participate in a hands on watercolour activity at the Richmond Hill Central Library. 

Heritage Walking Tour - 11:00 a.m. - Meet at the Richmond Hill Heritage Centre to explore a unique part the city featuring landmarks that date back to a time when Yonge Street was a dirt road and the preferred means of transportation was horse and buggy. Rain or Shine.

Creativity Crafting Station -  - 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. and 2 – 4 p.m.

We provide the craft supplies, you provide the creativity! What will you make? Art for the fridge, an animal friend, a fancy crown or perhaps even a fire-breathing dragon? at the Richmond Hill Central Library

Kid’s Space Adventure with Marky Monday in Richmond Hill at the RHCPA!  11 a.m. – 4 p.m. - Come for a family fun filled afternoon from outer space in the main lobby of the RHCPA celebrating Culture Days, and the launch of local children’s entertainer Marky Monday’s new musical album Adventures In Space! Enjoy great live entertainment, informative workshops, face painting, arts and crafts, vendor booths, and food and beverage. You also won’t want to miss the exciting special appearance from children's entertainer Marky Monday, signing autographs and posing for pictures with fans from 3-4pm after his main stage performance. This event is free.

Discover your Inner Artist - 11 a.m. - 5p.m.  - Visit the Richmond Hill Group of Artists at the Mill Pond Gallery and discover your inner artist! Members of the RHGA run weekly gallery shows.  There are Open Studio days, Figure Drawing Sessions, Adult and Children Art Classes, Demo Evenings and 1 Day Workshops. Our Discover Your Inner Artist annual group show and sale features original artwork in a large variety of themes, styles and subject.  Meet the artists, see some artist demonstrations.

Tai Chi and Tai Chi Dance - 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. - Come and join tai chi exercises and tai chi dancing. It's easy, even you have never done it before! Red Maple Sunset Glow Cultural Association will do a 24-form style tai chi, a short version of tai chi that is composed of twenty-four unique movements at the Richmond Hill Central Library

Fun With Origami - 12 – 4 p.m. - Origami Canada offers a free hands-on teaching station for kids, parents and senior friends of all ages! Come and learn the real art of Origami, which is a technique of folding 1 sheet of paper into something amazing without the aid of scissors. More elaborate creations will be on display to give you a feel of what origami can achieve.  At the Richmond Hill Central Library

Build Your Own Animal Sculpture with Richmond Hill’s Artist in Residence - 1- 4 p.m. - Build your own animal sculpture with Richmond Hill’s Artist in Residence, Cindy Scaife! Families will have the opportunity to view Cindy’s animal sculpture series called “A Puzzling Habitat” and create mini sculptures of a Red-Headed Woodpecker, a Jefferson Salamander or a Snapping Turtle.  At the Richmond Hill Central Library.

STEAM Storytime  -1 – 1:45 p.m. This is a 45 minute story time that explores themes of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math through stories, rhymes and songs. Tickets handed out 15 minutes before the program begins At the Richmond Hill Central Library.. Limit of 30 tickets.

Chinese Knot Weaving Art -  1:30 – 4 p.m. - In this free workshop, Three's Company for Culture will introduce Chinese Knot Weaving Art culture. Participants will have the hands on opportunity to use the provided string to make beautiful ornaments. Chinese knotting is a decorative handicraft art that began as a form of Chinese folk art in the Tang and Song dynasty (960–1279 CE) in China. At the Richmond Hill Central Library.

Chorus York: Sing With Us! -  2 – 3 p.m. Listen to the wonderful voices of Chorus York and then learn to perform a choral work! Chorus York is a growing community auditioned SATB choir newly inaugurated in February of 2016 and already grown to about 30 voices. Led by our passion for singing, we are setting out to inspire the growth of choral music in our community through the performance of a variety of choral music ranging from Bach to Broadway, Show Tunes to Classical. We Are Colourful Friends - 3 – 4 p.m. Make a colourful puppet based on a character from the popular children's book, "We Are Colourful Friends," with local Richmond Hill author/illustrator Josephine Vaccaro-Chang. At the Richmond Hill Central Library.
