Shoplifters is a beautiful film, set in Tokyo, that tells the story of a family that rely on shoplifting to cope with a life of poverty. In their daily shoplifting routine, they find a young girl and take her in as one of their own. The story takes on several twists as the young girl’s family embarks on the search for their daughter.
Rated 99% by Rotten Tomatoes, the film is in Japanese with English subtitles and runs 121 minutes.
The film premiered on May 13, 2018 at the Cannes Film Festival, where it went on to win the Palme d'Or. The film was released in Japan on June 8, 2018 and was a critical and commercial success. SHOPLIFTERS won the Asia Pacific Screen Award for Best Feature Film, and was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film. In August 2018, SHOPLIFTERS was selected as the Japanese entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 91st Academy Awards.
