On April 18 Mayor David West delivered his 2023 State of the City Address at the Richmond Hill Board of Trade Mayor’s Luncheon.
His talk focused on Richmond Hill’s future, highlighting City projects and plans that will ensure the community continues to evolve and thrive.
Here are some highlights
- The City now has a Land Acknowledgement.
- There is a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Strategy which includes the Mayor's Circle of Inclusivity Champions,
- He acknowledged that our city is very diverse and this is such a strength - it provides connections from all over the world to leverage for economic development.
- Richmond Hill is a regional centre for business enterprise, investment and innovation, and is uniquely connected by a radiating network of transit services including the Yonge North Subway Extension, GO Transit, VIVA BRT, York Region Transit and the future 407 Transitway,
- Affordable, livable housing options for everyone is a real concern. The City has been given a target of 27,000 new housing units by 2031 and needs to work closely with developers to achieve this.
- The environment is important. The City has a forward-thinking Community Energy and Emissions Plan that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and conserve energy. The goal is to reach net zero emissions by 2050. Last year the City planted almost 10,000 trees. Close attention will be paid to Sustainability Metrics for green development standards to quantify and evaluate the sustainability performance of new developments.
- Both the Town Park and Mill Pond Park will have major improvements.
