York Region is home to the Jefferson Salamander, an endangered species with habitats in the City of Richmond Hill.
Each year, these special amphibians cross Stouffville Road on rainy nights in early spring, leaving their winter habitat to travel to their breeding grounds.
Intermittent night closures on Stouffville Road between March 24 to April 24 will allow them to complete their journey safely.
Due to the unseasonably warmer temperatures, this year’s closure has been extended from three weeks to four weeks to accommodate higher anticipated rates of crossing.
