Background of Seniors Coffee Chats
In spring 2023, the Age-Friendly Community Council (ACF) of Richmond Hill launched a bi-weekly Coffee Chat initiative to combat social isolation among seniors, particularly those aged 55 and older. The program provides a welcoming space for older adults to connect, engage in activities, and build friendships. A volunteer committee, with staff support, organized a variety of activities such as crafts, puzzles, word games, light exercise, and guest speakers. At each session, complimentary refreshments are provided and the opportunity to join interactive games to encourage social connections.
The City of Richmond Hill secured funding through the Seniors Community Grant Program to expand the initiative, making it a key part of the community’s age-friendly efforts. In October 2024, MPP Daisy Wai visited the McConaghy Centre to show support and acknowledge the program's impact.
To date, 249 seniors have participated, and the Coffee Chats continue to foster a sense of belonging and well-being. The program runs bi-weekly until March 2025 at two locations: McConaghy Centre and Oak Ridges. Richmond Hill Residents aged 55+ are invited to register for upcoming sessions, with registration opening on the first of each month for the following month.
