for some now, and for some in a few weeks.
This fall, protect yourself and others from COVID-19 and the flu!
Eligible high-risk populations can book an appointment for the updated COVID-19 vaccine and flu shot as of Tuesday, October 10, 2023.
It is safe to receive both vaccines at the same time. Individuals can get one vaccine or get both flu and COVID vaccines at the same appointment.
Did you know?
- A new updated COVID-19 vaccine will provide the best protection from severe illness – it closely targets current COVID-19 strains circulating in the community.
- We know protection decreases over time. Getting vaccinated when you are eligible will help build your protection against COVID-19 and the flu over the fall and winter months. Vaccination layered with personal protective measures and preventing the spread of respiratory infections continues to be our strongest defense against COVID-19 and the flu.
- High-risk populations are being prioritized
The new XBB.1.5- COVID-19 vaccine and the flu shot will be initially given to our high-risk and eligible groups, including:
- Residents, staff and caregivers at long-term care homes
- Residents and staff of congregate living homes (retirement homes and other settings)
- Individuals 65 years of age and older
- Health care workers and first responders, including hospitalized people and hospital staff
- Pregnant individuals (both vaccines are safe in pregnancy)
- Individuals six months of age and older with underlying health conditions
- Children aged six months to five years will also be prioritized based on their increased risk of severe outcomes from influenza (but will be able to get both COVID-19 and influenza vaccine at the same time)
- Individuals who identify as First Nation, Inuit or Metis and their household members
- Members of racialized and other equity-deserving communities
Eligible individuals are recommended to get an updated COVID-19 vaccine dose if it's been at least six months since their last COVID-19 vaccine dose or since they last had COVID-19.
Starting October 30, 2023, it is anticipated the new COVID-19 vaccine and influenza vaccine (flu shot) will be available to the general public.
